Beyond his engagement in a twelve-week course on the Art of Transition, Asad supported the course development though his constructive and practical feedback. His feedback and ideas supported the course on content, marketing, and organization level. Addressing all these elements, Asad contributed to course development in a way that makes me think he would be a great product advisor to have – no matter how complex the service or the situation at hand.

Yesterday, I had a great opportunity to attend a masterclass on Design Thinking in Global Health Policy at Hamad Bin Khalifa University, delivered by Asad Bandeali.
What made the session particularly valuable was how it clarified and illustrated the concepts we are currently exploring in our Designing and Implementing Health Policy course with Dr. Evren TOK. Seeing theory translated into practical design approaches reinforced why human-centred and equity-centred thinking matter so much in real policy contexts.

The masterclass challenged us to move from designing for people to designing with people, and to rethink how power, voice, and lived experience are positioned in health policy processes. Drawing on Qatar’s real policy priorities, it became clear that constraints such as health literacy, stigma, cultural norms, and workforce capacity are not peripheral issues but core design parameters.

I was especially drawn to the idea of shifting from “power over” communities to “power with and within” them. This approach strongly resonates with my interest in patient engagement and people-centred policy design.
A timely reminder that meaningful health policy innovation starts by actively listening to lived experience, before rushing to solutions.
